Algae Products

Enoil Bioenergies is developing solar greenhouses for the farming of microalgae:

Algae is an informal term for a large, diverse group of photosynthetic organisms which are not necessarily closely related. Included organisms range from unicellular genera, such as Chlorella and the diatoms, to multicellular forms, such as the giant kelp, a large brown alga which may grow up to 50 meters in length. Most are aquatic and autotrophic and lack many of the distinct cell and tissue types, which are found in land plants. The largest and most complex marine algae are called seaweeds, while the most complex freshwater forms are the Charophyta, a division of green algae. Algae has a number of commercial uses:

  • Algae as human food or supplements
  • Algae in animal or fish feed
  • Pharmaceutical drugs or cosmetics products
  • Algae-based products: Biodiesel, Ethanol, Methane & Hydrogen
  • Algae-based products: Algae BioPlastic, Algae fertilizers
  • Cultivation of algae for CO2 capture

Algae farming with photobioreactor technology (PBT)

Algae cultivation can be achieved in two ways: open ponds and photobioreactors (PBR). A photobioreactor is a closed equipment which provides a controlled environment and enables high productivity of algae. As it is a closed system, all growth requirements of algae are introduced into the system and controlled according to the requirements. PBRs facilitate better control of culture environment such as carbon dioxide supply, water supply, optimal temperature, efficient exposure to light, culture density, pH levels, gas supply rate, mixing regime, etc.

Advantages of photobioreactors

  • Cultivation of algae is in controlled circumstances, hence potential for much higher productivity
  • Large surface-to-volume ratio. PBRs offer maximum efficiency in using light and therefore greatly improve productivity. Typically, the culture density of algae produced is 10 to 20 times greater than algae culture done in bags.
  • Better control of gas transfer.
  • Reduction in evaporation of growth medium and more uniform temperature.
  • Better protection from outside contamination.
  • Space-saving – Can be mounted vertically, horizontally or at an angle, indoors or outdoors.
  • Reduced Fouling – Recently available self-cleaning tube mechanisms can dramatically reduce fouling.
